The Chief Defence Scientist Dr Alex Zelinsky delivered the first of the 2013 Innovation Lecture series in Sydney last night for the Warren Centre for Advanced Engineering.

The title of his talk was 'Think Big and Make It Happen'. Dr Zelinsky spoke to a packed audience of 300 guests at the Powerhouse Museum and presented case studies on innovation from his career as an entrepreneur, a CSIRO senior executive and as head of the Defence Science and Technology Organisation.

He said Australian innovators need to create a big vision that has impact and focuses on addressing challenges of national significance. It is not enough, he said, to create world-leading technology. One must ensure the technology is viable and has a market. He also highlighted team work, collaboration, a commitment to nurture talent, quest for excellence and strong leadership as key ingredients for success in innovation.

The Warren Centre Innovation Lecture series is a premier event in Australia's science and engineering community. Dr Zelinsky will be also delivering the lecture at other venues throughout Australia from August to December.
