Event | National Science Week 2024

National Science Week is Australia's annual celebration of science and technology. Each year, we are proud to recognise the incredible contributions that our scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians make to Defence capability and national security.

It is also an opportunity to inspire interest and fascination in scientific pursuits.

The 2024 theme was "Species Survival – More Than Just Sustainability" and we had several events and activities to take part in.

Science Alive

Every year, Defence presents at Adelaide's Science Alive. Held between August 3rd and 4th, it is the largest, single, interactive science exhibition in Australia. With a diverse range of exhibitors and interactive displays, it offered a fantastic opportunity for people of all ages to engage with science in a fun and meaningful way, taking part in hands-on STEM activities and talking with STEM professionals from Defence, industry, academia, and the community.

Aboriginal STEM Learners Congress

The Aboriginal STEM Learners Congress acknowledges the rich STEM wisdom within Aboriginal culture and the next generation of thinkers.

Encompassing hands-on experiments and workshops to thought-provoking discussions from keynote speakers and prominent First Nations STEM professionals, the event sparked scientific creativity and curiosity, helping students recognise STEM as a viable and meaningful career path.

Government Science Showcase

Geoscience Australia held the final Exploring for the Future online public Showcase during 13–16 August 2024, marking the conclusion of this remarkable 8-year program and celebrating its enduring legacy.

The 2024 Showcase delivered comprehensive work, including transformed national datasets, improved mineral, energy, and groundwater assessments, unravelled regional geology, new decision support tools and more.
