Event | National Science Week 2025

National Science Week is Australia's annual celebration of science and technology that aims to inspire interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and acknowledges the significant contributions of STEM professionals, including Defence scientists in Australia.
This year's theme is Decoding the Universe – Exploring the unknown with nature's hidden language, with 2025 being the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. Quantum mechanics, with its exploration of the fundamental laws governing the universe at the smallest scales, provides a framework for understanding how information is encoded and processed in the universe.
CDS Prof Tanya Monro will launch Defence's celebration of National Science Week on Thursday 7 August at the Russell Conference Centre. There will be a panel of senior leaders providing an overview of the transformative impact innovation, science and technology has had on the Defence sector, as well as the significant challenges that must be addressed to ensure continued progress and success.
Dr Ben Sparkes will speak on How quantum technology can provide secure and robust time synchronisation between Defence assets in the absence of GPS.
Dr Jesse McCarthy will speak on How sovereign capabilities in computational and experimental aerodynamics contribute to the MQ-28A Ghost Bat design and operation.
A hot breakfast will be served at 0800 prior to the formalities.
