Grand challenges for safeguarding Australia

The Grand Challenges program is one of the largest initiatives under the Next Generation Technologies Fund. These initiatives are high-impact and scientifically complex, involving collaboration across DSTG and with external partners.

They require deep scientific and technical expertise across many disciplines, and integrated and productive collaborations with industry, universities and government.

The first Grand Challenge was to Counter Improvised Threats. After a strong response from industry and academia and a rigorous evaluation process, more than 20 organisations are collaborating on developing prototypes of a threat detection and defeat system, over the next 4 years.
