JORN is leading the way in over-the-horizon radar

Australia is leading the way in over-the-horizon radar (OTHR) systems thanks to over 50 years of deep collaboration between defence scientists, industry and our ADF.
The Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN) grew from humble origins in DSTG to be the finest operational OTHR network produced in the world. Operated by the Royal Australian Air Force, JORN can detect and track aircraft and ships at ranges of 1000-3000 km -- serving as a crucial part of Australia's air and maritime defence capabilities.
Australia's success is largely due to the teamwork of highly motivated scientists, engineers and technicians, many of whom have devoted their entire working careers to the development of OTHR. A hallmark of the Australian OTHR program is the close collaboration between Defence and Defence industry with a clear focus on common objectives and a One-Defence vision.
Canada's proposed plans to purchase JORN for its Arctic defence is a testament to Australia's ability to produce high-class and high-value OTHR radar capability.
"It really is a very significant milestone," says Chief Defence Scientist Prof Tanya Monro. "It is the biggest defence export proposed by quite some margin, and it really holds up the extraordinary things we can do in Australia when we put our minds to it and commit."
