Calculation of High Frequency Land Backscatter Coefficients

Five regions in Northern Australia were analysed and a dataset for the land backscatter coefficients was collated. The data analysis involved comparing the difference between observed backscatter ionograms (plots of the return power as a function of group range and frequency) and synthesised ionograms.

RTM322 Engine Bearing Red Substance Contamination and Corrosion Investigation

The Navy Aviation Systems Program Office (NASPO) requested DST analyse a red substance that had been identified around bearings in the lubrication system of several RTM322 engines.

An Investigation into RAN Ship Structural Life-of-Type Management without Hull Monitoring Systems

In this report we describe a preliminary study on the considerations, assumptions, and options for managing the structural Life-of-Type (LOT) of new Royal Australian Navy (RAN) ships.

Concept Development of a Modular Automated Care Stretcher

In this report we propose a concept for a casualty evacuation stretcher with continuous monitoring and automated care functionality.

Forensic (Facial) Comparison: Linking the Science and the Practice - Course Overview and Evaluation

The Australian Federal Police (AFP), Facial Identification - Specialist Operations Branch, commissioned the Defence Science and Technology (DST) Group to develop and deliver a training course for staff working in the forensic facial comparison domain.

Target Plate Deformation Time-History from a Detonating Buried Charge in Various Sand Media

The present report expands on the analysis of the loading from a buried improvised explosive device (IED) for a variety of sands and soils, where it was considered for only dry calcite sand in a previous DST report.

Calculation of High Frequency Land Backscatter Coefficients

A suitable model of the return ground clutter is required to help assess the performance of over-the-horizon radar. Currently, models for the clutter reflected from the sea exist but there are no models for the backscatter from land. The backscatter coefficient, which characterises the backscattered power, can be determined by considering the difference between observed backscatter ionograms and synthesised ionograms.

A High Performance Active Antenna for the High Frequency Band

This report describes the design of a high performance high frequency (HF) active antenna starting from the antenna rod and finishing with the output buffer stage which drives the co-axial transmission line feeding a receiver.

Bistatic Radar Concept Demonstrator (BiRCD) System Development and Verification

In this report the development and verification of the Bistatic Radar Concept Demonstrator (BiRCD) system within the Surveillance and Reconnaissance Systems Branch (SRS) is described.
