ADSTAR - Australian Defence Science, Technology and Research (ADSTAR) Summit
The Australian Defence Science, Technology and Research (ADSTAR) Summit 2024 was recently hosted in Canberra, bringing the innovation, science and technology ecosystem together to share ideas on a global scale.
The program featured speakers ranging from senior Defence leaders and researcher, to defence industry representatives and other Australian and international researchers.
Chief Defence Scientist, Professor Tanya Monro AC said the Summit brought together the very best of Australia’s research and innovation community to explore ‘the art of the possible’.
‘ADSTAR saw curious minds come together and collaborate, to learn from thought-leaders and experts, delving into the latest concepts and emerging technologies to defend Australia’s interests,’ Professor Monro said.
The summit was an opportunity to build new relationships and strengthen established partnerships across Defence, government, industry, and academic sectors, utilising both in-person and hybrid remote engagement to bring communities of interest together.
‘Defence’s approach to innovation is one that aims to unite and harness the national science and technology enterprise to create new relationships and strengthen existing partnerships across government, industry and academia,’ Prof Monro said.
‘ADSTAR was also a great opportunity to engage with the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator and learn more about how we are taking Defence further, faster by bringing essential capabilities to our armed forces at speed.’
This year’s ADSTAR theme was “Accelerating the delivery of asymmetric Defence capabilities” and featured a plenary program consisting of six themes aligned to the innovation, science and technology priorities outlined in the Defence Strategic Review: trusted autonomy; quantum technology; information warfare; long-range fires; hypersonics; and directed energy.

The inaugural Australian Defence Science, Technology and Research Summit (ADSTAR) was held in Sydney from 20 to 22 July 2022.
Hosted by Defence Science and Technology Group on behalf of the Department of Defence, the summit brought together more than 1700 people from across the research and innovation sector. Participants shared ideas with a view to enhancing capability for the Australian Defence Force.
