Event | 2023 SABRE Workshop

The Inaugural, Safeguarding Australia through Biotechnology Response and Engagement (SABRE) workshop was launched at the ‘Science Meets Parliament’ Initiative, March 2023. The mission of the workshop was to emphasise the importance of partnership and innovation, in building stronger more resilient systems, that can adapt to the evolving threat landscape. Over 200 participants from across the biotechnology ecosystem were immersed in one of three simulated live-threat scenarios (vignettes).

The vignettes, led by subject matter experts, drew out operational concepts developed by representatives from the Defence, Government, Industry, and Academia. This approach aggregated hundreds of interdisciplinary inputs, and provided meaningful insights for Industry, Academia, and Government decision-makers. The vignettes identified converging themes and emphasised the importance of preparedness, collaboration, and communication in detecting, preventing, and managing pathogen outbreaks.

The day also highlighted the need for various stakeholders, detection methods, dual-use technologies, data capture frameworks and storage, and prevention strategies to be considered in such situations.
