STEM Careers | Jasmin Wieckmann - Vehicle Mechanic

Jasmin Wieckmann

Throughout her school years Jasmin always enjoyed the more hands-on subjects. During college, she studied visual arts, digital design, hospitality and engineering.

Her passion for all things mechanical started while she was growing up.

"I was always interested in making things or helping my dad work on his cars and machinery. Getting my driving license was when my love for cars really started, that's when I realised a mechanical apprenticeship was the right pathway for me."

She visited the local Defence Force Recruiting centre and they recommended she take part in the Army Pre-Conditioning Program (APCP) which is a program designed to improve fitness to ensure you are in the best condition ahead of Initial Recruit Training.

She is currently studying a heavy diesel apprenticeship with Wodonga TAFE at the Army School of Mechanical Engineering where she is learning all aspects of mechanical principles from battery chemistry to engine rebuilds. She also takes part in external courses such as welding and dogging.

In her spare time she offers her mechanical skills to Team Army, a Defence Force Recruiting initiative that supports events such as the Australian Supercar Championship, Australian Formula 1, along with many school, agricultural and car festivals.

"I was lucky enough to be chosen to represent Team Army at the Tasmanian Agricultural Show, which was an excellent opportunity to speak to members of the public who have a mutual interest in cars and those who were interested in pursuing a career in Defence."

Jasmin says the best thing about her career is learning new skills every day and being able to apply those when working on her own car.

"Working in Defence has taught me so much. The close working community has a great atmosphere where I have met lots of interesting people and made many friends for life."
