A group of Year 10 students from Eltham College in Melbourne were given a rare treat at the Fishermans Bend laboratory of the DST Group last week.

The visit was part of DST’s commitment to inspire science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) candidates for the future.

To support the promotion of STEM in schools and the community, Defence research engineer Michael Opie has partnered with Eltham College through the “Scientists and Mathematicians in Schools” program to encourage a career-path in STEM and give the students a better understanding of the value of science to defence capability.

The students gained insights into a number of DST activities by witnessing Aircraft Fatigue Testing, Immersive Visualisation, and Forensic Engineering demonstrations, along with receiving career advice from some of the DST scientists.

“It was a great experience for the students to hear experts in their fields talking to them about various mathematical and engineering applications involved in DST projects,” said Eltham College maths and science teacher, Mary Reynolds.

This is the second group from Eltham College to visit DST Melbourne in the last year. Judging by the many questions and smiles on faces, the students made the most of this unique opportunity.
