Wide Area Motion Imagery (WAMI)

An aircraft with surveillance cameras mounted below it.

The Imaging Systems Branch conducts research and development into the use of Wide Area Motion Imagery (WAMI) for Defence and National Security.

This research has been applied to national disaster relief activities including locating fire fronts through thick smoke to help protect fire fighters and direct them to critical areas under threat. It has also be used to assess the accessibility of areas and the loss of property once the fires have passed.

A core element of the WAMI research is the conduct of flight trials using the DST Group Defence Experimentation Airborne Platform (DEAP)
