CTH Implementation of a Two-Phase Material Model With Strength: Application to Porous Materials

This report discusses improved CTH hydrocode modelling of ejecta (soil, sand etc) from detonation of buried explosive devices using two phase material model.

Fatigue Crack Initiation from Pitting Introduced during the Anodising Process

This report presents examples of components from ADF aircraft that exhibited surface pitting which formed during the anodising pre-treatment process. In three of the examples, fatigue cracking had initiated from the surface pits leading to failure of the components.

Characterisation and Next-generation Sequencing Analysis of Unknown Arboviruses

Arbovirus is used to describe viruses transmitted via blood-feeding arthropods, such as mosquitoes, biting midges and ticks. This report focuses on characterisation of two unknown rhabdoviruses and describes a new method to prepare the virus samples for next-generation sequencing analysis.

Equivalent Crack Size Modelling of Corrosion Pitting in an AA7050-T7451 Aluminium Alloy and its Implications for Aircraft Structural Integrity

This report examines the research conducted on 7050-T7451 and how corrosion pitting could influence the fatigue life of components in RAAF aircraft manufactured from this alloy. The report shows that corrosion pitting causes not only a reduction in time to failure at a certain stress but also up to a 50% reduction in the fatigue threshold.

Application of Quantitative Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy to Chemical Warfare Agents

The development of a Proton quantitative Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (qHNMR) Spectroscopy method for determining the purity of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) using homogeneous internal standards.

Development of a Thermal Wave Interferometry System for Thin-Film Characterisation

This report describes the development of a Thermal Wave Interferometry (TWI) system for the characterisation of film thickness. The system was shown to resolve variations in paint thickness of less than 1.5 μm

Chemical Investigations of the Castor Bean Plant Ricinus communis

This investigation was to understand the chemical composition of the seeds of the castor bean plant Ricinus communis, and to ascertain if these differences could be used for provenance classification.

Establishment of a VISAR Measurement System for Material Model Validation in DSTO

The Velocity Interferometer System for Any Reflector (VISAR) is a system for recording the shock response of condensed materials. This reports on preliminary tests using the recently commissioned DSTO VISAR system, providing an assessment of the experimental set-up and accuracy of the system installation.

16th International Command and Control Research Technology Symposium (ICCRTS) June 2011 Overseas Visit Report

This overseas visit report provides an overview of ICCRTS 2011. Including the three primary research areas that emerged from the conference of agility and what that means for organisational structures; the concept of "Harmony of Purpose" 1; and the need to develop better approaches to discovery of second and tertiary effects to decision making, operational analysis and nation building.
