Investigation of Stress Intensity Factor for Overloaded Holes and Cold-Expanded Holes

A two-dimensional weight function approach is used to determine stress intensity factors for cracks in either tensile or compressive stress fields, due to one of three mechanisms: remote tension overload, remote compression overload or hole cold expansion.

Development of a Thermal Wave Interferometry System for Thin-Film Characterisation

This report describes the development of a Thermal Wave Interferometry (TWI) system for the characterisation of film thickness. The capability addresses the need for a method to assess bondline uniformity for the compact multi-parameter load evaluation (CMPLE ) device, a low-cost surface-mounted sensor package with an in-flight strain measurement capability.

Calm Water Resistance of a 1:25 Scale Model of the Armidale Class Patrol Boat

DSTO, in collaboration with DNPS, have undertaken a series of calm water resistance scaled model tests on the Armidale Class Patrol Boat, (ACPB) to deveop a database set for validation studies.

Review of Literature on Probability of Detection for Magnetic Particle Nondestructive Testing

A critical review of the available literature concerning the minimum reliably detectable defect size aNDI for magnetic particle testing (MPT) in aerospace applications is presented.

Hypersonic flight

Through our HiFIRE collaboration, we have an active program to develop hypersonics for sustained high-speed flight.

Dr Chris Wallbrink, research scientist with DSTO, has won the 2013 Jaap Schijve Award for outstanding contribution to the scientific advancement of managing fatigue and damage tolerance in aircraft.
DSTO's Dr Chris Wallbrink is the first Australian to receive the international Jaap Schijve award for young aeronautical engineers.

Pipe patching technology

DST Group has investigated a number of pipe patching repair systems.

Hawk Lead-in Fighter fatigue testing

DST Group is undertaking fatigue tests to establish the endurance limits of the Hawk Mk 127 Lead-In Fighter.

Infrared signature management for aircraft

A problem posed by operators of military aircraft is that the engines emit substantial amounts of infrared radiation, which infrared-guided missiles home in on.

Submarine hydrodynamics

DST Group has tested a generic submarine model in our Low Speed Wind Tunnel.
